The following is a list of definitions for various
technologies that we may have mentioned throughout this website.
Domain Name A
domain name represents a website to the outside world.
Usually ending in .com for businesses primarily in the
United States.
HTML Hypertext
Markup Language The language used to mark up text
documents so that they can be formatted appropriately and
linked to other documents for use on the World Wide Web.
FTP An Internet
service for publishing or transferring files between
different machines, such as from a Developers computer to a
web server, including those that run different operating
systems.
CGI Common Gateway
Interface script A program used to transfer data from an
HTML form to an application. The CGI script runs on the
server that hosts the webpage that has the form.
CSS - Cascading Style
Sheets - A cascading
style sheet is a document containing style information that
can be referenced by multiple Web pages. Styles define
appearance and formatting of content on Web pages and allow
authors more control over how content is displayed in
browsers. They are often used for such things as
rollover effects on hyperlinks, various font style and color
settings, and more.
FrontPage Extensions
- By using Web Components in Microsoft FrontPage, you can
add a wide variety of features to your Web site, ranging
from hit counters that register the number of visitors to a
page and collecting data with contact forms, to photo
galleries that display a collection of graphics.
Java Applet A
programming language that supports the creation of
distributed programs, called applets, whose functionality
can be easily and flexibly split between a client computer
and the server that it is connected to.
Perl Practical
Extraction and Report Language An elegant programming
language often used to write CGI scripts.
PHP PHP Hypertext
Processor An open source programming language for
connecting websites with databases of MySQL and other
formats.
MySQL An open
source database format.
Macromedia Flash
Web multimedia animations, videos, audio, and complete
websites that are generally dynamic, streaming, or run off
of a server.
DHTML Dynamic HTML
Webpage content that changes each time it is viewed
through the use of JavaScript as well as new HTML extensions
that enable webpage reaction to user input without
contacting the server.
JavaScript
Specialized programming language for building programs that
are embedded in an HTML document and perform simple tasks;
not related to Java.
Real Audio / Video
Streaming web audio and video formats from Real, Inc.
QuickTime A
multiplatform standard from Apple Computer, Inc., for
multimedia.
QuickTime VR A
multiplatform standard for image-based virtual reality from
