Save $49.97 on the Whistler 1753 All-Band Radar/Laser Detector with Voice Alert - now $89.98 Posted Wednesday, July 19, 2006 by David
The Whistler 1753 All-Band Radar/Laser Detector with Voice Alert alerts you to the presence of all major police radar systems--including the super-wide Ka band--while also offering 360-degree detection of all types of laser guns. As a result, American drivers can rest easy while cruising down Texas, Oregon, and Connecticut highways. Among the frequencies detected by the 1753 are the X band (10.500 to 10.550 GHz), K band (24.050 to 24.250 GHz), and Ka band (33.400 to 36.000 GHz) and laser wavelengths of 905 +/- 10 nanometers. When a specific frequency is found, the unit notifies you of the specific band with both voice and text alerts.
The Whistler 1753 All-Band Radar/Laser Detector with Voice Alert does more than just detect radar and laser equipment, however. It also offers a Safety Warning System (SWS) that picks up alerts broadcast by many highway crews and emergency vehicles, helping you avoid accident scenes and road construction delays. The unit's signal strength meter, meanwhile, tells you whether the radar gun is a few meters or a few miles away. And drivers who frequently travel through both urban and rural areas will dig the multiple city and highway modes. The three city modes help reduce the annoyance of false alerts from automatic garage door openers and burglar alarms--typically on the X band--by providing an initial alert when a signal is first detected, then remaining quiet unless the signal strength becomes extremely strong. Users can also choose to lower the X band sensitivity (City 1) or turn it off completely (City 2) without affecting the other bands. Highway mode, by contrast, does not filter out any band, giving you full protection while you drive.
Another safety-enhancing feature is the Stay Alert mode, which is designed to test a driver's focus. Once you activate the Stay Alert mode, the device will beep every 30 to 60 seconds, after which you'll have five seconds to press a button. If the button isn't pressed, an alarm sounds. Note that the Stay Alert mode isn't intended as a substitute for adequate rest--drivers should never operate a motor vehicle when drowsy--but merely a quick test to make sure you're on the ball after a few hours of highway driving.
Additional features include a quiet mode that automatically cancels the audio during an alert within 20 seconds; an auto quiet mode that instinctively mutes or lowers the volume after the first few seconds of beeping; and a tutorial mode that gets you up to speed on the 1753's full feature set. The unit measures 2.85 by 1.3 by 4.3 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
